From Agadir to Essaouira: The Ultimate Coastal Road Trip Guide
The drive from Agadir to Essaouira is one of the most beautiful routes in Morocco. Forget the bus. With a rental car, you can stop at surf villages, see goats on trees, and enjoy the Atlantic ocean view at your own pace.
TL;DR - Trip Overview
- Distance: About 175 km (109 miles).
- Driving Time: 3 to 4 hours (depending on stops).
- Route: The N1 Coastal Road (scenic view).
- Flexibility: Pick up in Agadir, drop off in Essaouira or Marrakech (on request).
- Car Needed: Any car works. A Dacia Duster is great for comfort.
The Route & Driving Time
The direct drive takes about 3 hours if you do not stop. However, we recommend taking at least 4 or 5 hours to enjoy the journey. The road (N1) is paved and generally in good condition. It winds along the coast and then goes up into the hills.
Unlike the bus, a rental car gives you the freedom to pull over whenever you see a beautiful sunset or a nice cafe.

Best Stops Along the Way
Do not rush to the finish line. Here are the best places to pause your trip:
1. Taghazout & Tamraght
Just 30 minutes from Agadir. Famous for surfing and yoga. Stop here for a coffee or breakfast with a sea view.
2. Imsouane
The "Magic Bay." You must take a small detour off the main road to reach it. The panoramic view from the top is incredible.
3. Tamanar
A small town halfway between the two cities. It is a good place for a bathroom break or to buy water and snacks.
4. Sidi Kaouki
Located just before Essaouira. A wild, windy beach perfect for kitesurfing or a quiet lunch.
The Famous Goats on Trees
Yes, this is real. Between Tamri and Essaouira, you will see goats climbing Argan trees to eat the fruit. This is unique to this region of Morocco.
You will often see cars pulled over to take photos. It is safe to stop, but be careful of traffic. Sometimes the herders ask for a small tip (10 or 20 Dirhams) if you take a close-up photo.

Buying Argan Oil
This road is full of "Argan Cooperatives." If you want to buy oil, look for a place where you can see the women working and cracking the nuts. This ensures the oil is authentic and supports the local community.
Arriving in Essaouira & Drop-off Options
The old city of Essaouira (the Medina) is car-free. You cannot drive inside.
Where to park: There are large guarded parking lots near the port and near "Bab Marrakech." The cost is usually cheap (around 20-30 DH for the day or 50 DH overnight). Park your RideOn car there and explore the city on foot.
If you plan to continue your trip from Essaouira, you can return the rental car there! We also offer delivery to Marrakech or Casablanca. Just let us know when you book (extra fees apply for one-way rentals).
