Where to Surf Away from the Crowds in Agadir
Taghazout and Tamraght have consistent waves, but they attract many surfers. If you want to surf with fewer people in the water, you need to drive outside the main zones. Here are the locations north and south of Agadir that require a vehicle to access.
Summary
- Why drive: Public transport and taxis mainly serve the central hubs (Taghazout/Tamraght). A car lets you access dirt roads and empty stretches of beach.
- North Route: Aghroud and Tamri offer open beach breaks and catch more swell.
- South Route: Tifnit and Sidi R'bat offer quiet peaks in a more isolated environment.
- Vehicle needed: A standard car like a Dacia Logan is sufficient for these locations. A 4x4 is not required.
Spots North of Agadir
Driving north on the N1 road takes you past the busy points of Anchor Point and Hash Point. Continuing further reveals more open coastline.
1. Aghroud
About 40 minutes north of Agadir. You can recognize it by the brightly painted houses on the hill. The beach here is long, offering multiple peaks. It is a good alternative when the points in Taghazout are full.
2. Tamri
Located 1 hour north of Agadir. Tamri catches more waves than the sheltered spots further south when the swell is small. You will park near the estuary and walk down to the beach break.
3. Boiler's (Nearby)
Just before you reach the lighthouse at Cap Ghir. This is a rocky right-hand reef break. The parking area is just off the road, making it easy to check from the car.
Spots South of Agadir
The coastline south of Agadir is less developed for surf tourism. Driving south requires navigating through the city and heading towards the Souss-Massa region.
1. Tifnit
A traditional fishing village about 1 hour south of Agadir. The drive takes you through agricultural areas. The beach has various peaks and is usually empty compared to the northern spots. The wind can be a factor here.
2. Sidi R'bat
Further south, located near the Souss-Massa National Park. It is a quiet area. The drive involves some unpaved sections near the end, but a standard rental car can handle it if you drive slowly.
Parking and Security at Remote Beaches
When driving to quiet surf spots, keep these practical points in mind:
- Valuables: Do not leave phones, passports, or wallets visible on the seats. Take them with you in a waterproof bag or hide them securely.
- Keys: Use a surf key lockbox attached to the car, or take a non-electronic key with you in your wetsuit.
- Parking attendants: At spots like Tamri or Aghroud, you might see a local person wearing a high-visibility vest. They watch the cars for a small fee (usually 5 to 10 Dirhams). It is a standard practice and adds a layer of security.
If you have longboards or multiple shortboards, fitting them inside the car can be difficult. RideOn provides soft roof racks for a one-time fee of €20. You strap the boards to the roof, keeping the interior clean and leaving space for passengers.
